Malta Gaming Authority steps up sustainability efforts with new ESG Hub

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has launched a dedicated Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) hub in a major move towards sustainability. This innovative platform, which went live on 9 July 2024, provides registered licensees with extensive information on ESG reporting.

Pioneering sustainable practices in online gaming

The ESG hub is a unique initiative by the MGA that serves as a comprehensive resource for all aspects related to its voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice. This code is aimed at steering online gaming companies towards adopting best practices and meeting the ever-changing expectations of stakeholders.

The MGA’s initiative underscores the ongoing positive actions within the gaming industry and the commitment of its licensees to sustainability. The introduction of the ESG hub is a testament to the MGA’s dedication to fostering a more sustainable future in the gaming industry.

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has been actively championing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Apart from establishing the ESG hub, the MGA has implemented several initiatives to promote sustainable development, social responsibility, and robust governance.

One of the key initiatives is the development of a voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice. This code serves as an industry-specific framework designed to enhance transparency, encourage ESG reporting, and facilitate benchmarking among companies. It complements existing industry efforts and serves as a reference for remote gaming companies to regularly assess, report on, and improve their ESG practices.

The MGA has also extended the sign-up period for ESG Reporting due to sustained interest in registering past the original deadlines. This extension demonstrates the MGA’s commitment to making the Code more accessible to the wider industry.

These initiatives not only set a benchmark for excellence through sustainable development but also prepare local licensees for upcoming ESG legislation. They highlight the benefits of running a sustainably conscious operation, thereby enhancing the reputation of the gaming sector and providing a competitive advantage.

How operators can engage in MGA’s sustainability efforts

Companies can engage in the Malta Gaming Authority’s (MGA) sustainability initiatives by following these steps.

  • Voluntary Participation: The MGA’s ESG Code of Good Practice is a voluntary initiative. Companies have the discretion to decide if they are ready to start reporting on ESG results. Nevertheless, the MGA strongly encourages all licensees to adopt the Code.
  • Registration: Companies interested in participating in this initiative can confirm their participation by registering through a form provided by the MGA.
  • ESG Code Approval Seal: Companies that report under this Code will be awarded the ESG Code Approval Seal. This seal, valid for one year from the award date, is a testament to their commitment to ESG. Different seals will be awarded to licensees that meet Tier 1 or Tier 2 reporting requirements.
  • Confidentiality: Any confidential information submitted to the MGA in terms of the Code will be subject to the secrecy and disclosure obligations established in the Gaming Act. The MGA will use the information to track stakeholders’ commitment to ESG.
  • Consultation: The MGA has launched a targeted consultation with its licensees to gather their input and feedback on a draft voluntary ESG Code of Good Practice. This consultation serves as an opportunity for licensees to actively participate and further contribute towards the development of this code.

By participating in these initiatives, companies can reinforce their commitment to sustainability and enhance the industry’s ESG standing.
