German licence introduction brings new brands to the German betting market

The introduction of the new licence system brings new rules and new brands to the German betting market

As of 1 July 2021, a new Interstate Treaty on Gambling has come into force in Germany which includes official German gambling licences for sports betting, virtual slot machines, and online poker operators. With the German betting market experiencing a yearly high due to the ongoing European Championships, the introduction of the new licence system brings not only new rules but also new brands to the German betting market.

On March 12, 2020, various states in Germany agreed on the newest edition of the Interstate Treaty on Gambling.

Recently, the German media company ProSiebenSat.1 announced plans to enter the country’s regulated betting market with the new brand Jackone. Jackone is powered by Betsson’s B2B sportsbook solution and player account management platform Techsson.

Therefore, the brand will also operate under the betting licence of the company WeGame Limited which also has received the licence for the domains www.betsson.de, www.betsafe.de, www.casinowinner.de, www.guts.de, www.nordicbet.de, www.rizksport.de, and www.schnellwetten.de.

By the end of last year, the well-known international operator BetVictor had announced that its acquired licence would be used by the new brand BildBet which has been a success story since then. According to the feedback of the managers of the German betting portal My Wettbonus, BildBet has been one of the most popular operators in the market in the first half-year when it comes to new depositing customers.

With the German gambling licence having come into force, it will be interesting to see if more new brands will be established in the market in the near future. The Regional Council of Darmstadt – the authority which is responsible for the new German betting licence – currently lists 27 operators which are officially allowed to offer online gambling offers on the German market.

The regulation has met some resistance from the market, not least from the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) who claims the proposed tax breaches EU law.
